ADOPT-A-SPOT
PROGRAM

|
The
Adopt-A-Spot program applies to public areas of the
City, designed to enhance the environment and appearance of
Stamford. Local businesses support landscaping and maintenance
of these areas, and a Keep Stamford Beautiful sign is placed
on the site with the name of the supporting business. If your business
is interested in sponsoring a site, please contact Keep Stamford Beautiful. |
THE
GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP
Sponsored by General Electric Company
in 2005
Stamford
is a part of the nations largest organized litter cleanup program,
through our partnership with Keep America Beautiful, Inc.. Stamford
joined over two hundred cities nationwide in this project, with
the Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc. program in the South End,
the West Side and Springdale. 350 volunteers collected over
50 tons of litter and debris from these neighborhoods last year.
In 2001, the Great American Cleanup was expanded to include
the neighborhoods of Belltown, the Cove, Glenbrook and Waterside.

MAKE
A DIFFERENCE DAY
|
Make
A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping
others - a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. This
event is sponsored by USA Weekend magazine in partnership with
the Points of Light Foundation. In Stamford, Keep Stamford Beautiful,
Inc. has sponsored cleanups and daffodil planting in the South
End, the West Side, Waterside, the Cove, Springdale and Glenbrook.

N.I.C.E.
(Neighbors Involved in a Cleaner Environment) - (full brochure)
The
NICE program was designed to accommodate smaller groups of
residents to clean up their streets, vacant lots and neighborhoods.
Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc. will evaluate and coordinate
the cleanups; providing bags, gloves, dumpsters, rakes brooms
and shovels for the activity. NICE is a year round program
that is offered city wide.

LOADING
DOCK HEALTH & SAFETY CHECKLIST
This
checklist was designed in response to the problem
of accumulations of litter at loading docks that surfaced
during the Litter Index Test that was conducted in 1998. This
informational checklist is distributed to small companies
and corporations that have loading dock facilities.

FREE EVENTS
Keep Stamford
Beautiful, Inc. researches events, contacts event organizers,
and promotes these as "Litter Free Events". Keep Stamford
Beautiful, Inc. provides volunteers at these events to patrol
litter and distribute litter bags

IN- KEEP STAMFORD BEAUTIFUL

During the month of June, July and August, the Pitch In
- Keep Stamford Beautiful advertisement will be featured
as an anti-littering awareness program on local buses. The
ad is estimated to be seen 2,743,000 times in the 3 month
showing. .

STAMFORD
RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING PROGRAM
Through
the partnership of Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc., Stamford's
Office of Operations and Pitney Bowes, a recycling brochure was created for the City.
This brochure gives residents a complete guide on how and
where to recycle in the City of Stamford. Brochures are available
through the Customer Service Bureau at the Government Center,
or by mail through Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc.

RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE

This
program is sponsored by Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc. and
the Office of Operations. The program encourages residents
to bring their undecorated tree to the recycling centers
at One Harborview Avenue or Scofieldtown Road, and receive
a coupon for a free seedling tree. Seedling trees were made
available for pick up the week of Arbor Day, Seedling trees
are available for pick-up the week of Arbor Day at the recycling
centers.

ELECTRONIC
RECYCLING
Cell
Phones, PDA’s and Blackberries
Keep Stamford
Beautiful has discovered a creative way to raise funds without
asking for money. Instead, we ask you to donate your old,
unused electronic equipment, including all brands of cell
phones, PDA’s and Blackberries. The organization sells
your donated items to a recycling company who focuses on funding
charities through recycling efforts. Some of the items will
be reprogrammed and sold to developing countries as pre-paid
units, and the rest are scrapped for parts, and will either
be reused or recycled according to EPA standards. Items may
be dropped off at the Keep Stamford Beautiful office during
business hours, or arrangements can be made for large quantity
pickup.

PET
POLLUTION PROJECT
Working
with the Department of Operations, Keep Stamford Beautiful
has undertaken a project to decrease the amount of pet pollution
in public parks. Dispensers of biodegradable “mutt mitts”
to be used to clean up after pets are placed in parks throughout
the city, marked with clearly visible international dog-walking
signs. Dispensers have been placed in the parks at Cove Island,
Rippowam Park, Drotar Park (Springdale), Leone Park, Columbus
Park, Latham Park, and Ft. Stamford Park.

INTERNATIONAL
COASTAL CLEANUP
|
Keep Stamford Beautiful, Inc. partnered with Save the Sound,
SoundWaters and Volunterrs to remove unsightly debris from
Stamford's shoreline. The cleanup is part of the International
Coastal Cleanup coordinated by the Center for Marine Conservation.

MARINE
LITTER PREVENTION

This program is coordinated through the City of Stamford's
Customer Relations Bureau. The program consists of a boater
informational brochure and litter bag that are disbursed
with boat slip permits issued by the City.

RESPONSIBLE RETAILER'S PROGRAM
A combination
of in-store activities to reduce retail theft of potential
graffiti tools and to stop the sale of spray paint to customers
under the age of 18. The program is distributed to Stamford
merchants who sell spray paint.

Volunteers joined with Keep Stamford Beautiful to place
a variety of plants in planters located throughout the city.
the plants were chosen for hardiness and beauty, to brighten
up streets and sidewalks during the warm summer months.

STAMFORD
IN BLOOM
Sponsored by Heyman Properties in 2005
Stamford
in Bloom is Keep Stamford Beautiful’s annual city-wide beautification
campaign and contest. Homeowners are encouraged to plant gardens
visible from the street, and are awarded prizes for outstanding
garden efforts. The judges survey each garden's color, size,
variety of plants, the healthiness of the plants, the imagination
that went into the design and the overall beauty.

POLE
PATROL
Stamford,
like many other cities, is faced with a continual proliferation
of illegally posted signs in the public right-of-way. Keep
Stamford Beautiful, in partnership with the Office of Operations,
CL&P and SNET, will conduct a public awareness campaign
regarding the posting of illegal signage. Neighborhood associations
wilt be encouraged to remove the signs from utility poles
in their neighborhoods. |

CORPORATE
TEAM BUILDING PROJECTS
KSB is
contacted by corporations, or referred by the Volunteer Center,
to create community service projects for groups of corporate
volunteers.
